Microdochium patch or Pink Snow Mold is a fungus that is found primarily in cool-season grasses. It develops with or without snow cover, but its activity is most severe when snow falls on unfrozen ground. To identify this fungus, look for circular patches from 2-12 inches in diameter that are white or light tan in color. A pink hue is present on the outer edge of patches when the disease is actively developing. Grass patches are usually collapsed and matted down upon themselves as well.
How to prevent Pink Snow Mold:
- Don’t apply nitrogen when cold weather is expected or before the first expected prolonged snow cover.
- Maintain a mowing schedule into fall until the lawn stops growing.
- During the snowy months, use fencing and plants to prevent snow accumulation when possible and minimize traffic in the area.
- Once the snow has cleared, ensure that you have proper surface drainage, remove excess thatch, and aerate your lawn.
- Pick up leaves and debris throughout the year to prevent build up and wetness.
- Apply a fungicide may help control it nd keep it from spreading.
