Fungus
Affected Varieties – Fescue, Ryegrass
Brown patch is a fungal disease of cool-season turfgrasses. It can be identified as circular patches that are brown, tan or yellow, ranging is size from six inches to several feet in diameter. You’ll also see unique lesions in the leaf blades. (See picture below)
Brown patch is most severe during extended periods of hot, humid weather. Prolonged leaf wetness will increase brown severity.
While many factors can’t be controlled, like cloudy weather or fluctuating temperatures, you can reduce brown patch:
- Make sure there's proper drainage.
- Adequate light
- Aeration
- Practice good irrigation habits like avoid watering late in the afternoon.
- Follow proper application rates when feeding your lawn as well.
- Stop the problem before it starts with selecting varieties that are disease resistant.
- If that is not an option, try a fungicide to control the disease.
